Hand-painted original production cel with original background from the Production, “Zombie Island,” made by Hanna-Barbera Productions in the 1990s. The hand-painted cel is signed by William Hanna and Joe Barbera.
A production cel is one-of-a-kind and used in the creation of an animated film or cartoon short. It is hand-painted and photographed over a background painting to create a frame of the production. Because one background is used under a sequence of cels, the production art is usually sold with a reproduction of the original background. A cel with an original background is very rare. The move to computerized animation severely curtailed the supply of artwork on the market.
William Hanna and Joe Barbera, the eight-time Oscar duo, opened the doors of Hanna-Barbera in 1957. Hanna-Barbera had a major impact on television and became the most successful television animation studio in the world. It was the first studio to run an animated series during prime time while their other cartoons dominated Saturday mornings. With Bill’s comedic timing and Joe’s amazing storytelling instincts, this powerful partnership created legendary work that continues to entertain.
